Dezaleigh, an early school leaver, also known as Dez, is a vibrant and enthusiastic teenager who has always dreamed of working in childcare. Despite facing significant challenges, including anxiety stemming from pandemic-related isolation and her family’s housing instability, the 17-year-old still has a positive attitude.
Approaching OCTEC
After connecting with OCTEC Transition to Work (TtW) in Tolland NSW and consultant Neisha Mullen at the beginning of 2023, Dezaleigh embarked on a transformative journey. With the support our support, she focused on building her confidence and overcoming anxiety through interview practice and structured planning. Recognising her hands-on learning style, OCTEC enrolled Dezaleigh in a Certificate III in Childcare while also preparing for her Driver’s knowledge test. She was ecstatic when she passed the Driver’s knowledge test on her first attempt, a testament to her hard work and perseverance.
Working in her dream job
When Neisha was informed that one of her other Participants’ employer was looking for another trainee at their childcare centre, she promptly submitted Dez’s resume. After a successful interview and impressing the director during trial, Dez was offered employment – marking a significant milestone in her career journey.
Throughout her placement, Dezaleigh received ongoing support through her mentor and OCTEC TtW, who ensured she had the appropriate clothing and helped with performance reviews that were consistently positive.
