Defying the odds: Caleb’s incredible turnaround

When Caleb arrived at OCTEC DES Shepparton in the latter half of 2023, he faced significant challenges, including a limited education, little work experience, and a criminal history. He had struggled with a history of substance abuse, and also lacked a driver’s license. Despite his hope for a brighter future, Caleb feared that his past would prove too big a hurdle to overcome.

At OCTEC, Caleb met consultant Lauren Wilhelm, who quickly recognised his determination to improve himself. Through ongoing assessments, Laurent ensured Caleb participated in programs required by his parole conditions – she was impressed by his commitment and resilience. With her guidance, Caleb completed a drug and alcohol course, which ultimately helped him secure his driver’s license and gain a crucial step toward independence.

Both Lauren and Caleb understood that searching for a job would be a formidable challenge. Caleb had previously begun a welding qualification, but he was open to exploring various opportunities. Unfortunately, his past made many employers hesitant to consider him for employment.

Then, Caleb mentioned a friend who owned a small car repair business. Seizing this opportunity, Lauren arranged a meeting with the employer to discuss potential job openings. She offered the employer an OCTEC Biz Support package to cover expenses such as workwear, training, and licenses. The employer agreed to give Caleb a chance as a trades assistant, with the possibility of promoting him to an auto trade role if he proved to be a good fit.

To facilitate Caleb’s transition into the workforce, OCTEC provided him with work boots and safety clothing, as well as a fuel voucher to ensure he could travel to work until he was paid. Earlier this year, OCTEC invested in a forklift course for Caleb, further enhancing his skill set and expanding his career opportunities.

Caleb’s journey has certainly been challenging, yet with OCTEC’s unwavering support, he is building a new life for himself. In a recent message to Lauren, he expressed his appreciation for all the support.

“Work has been good, life’s been good. Everything just keeps getting better, honestly. I’ve been kicking so many goals.”
