Barriers
Bryn’s employment journey is both fascinating and inspiring, marked by a diverse background that includes service in the British Army and a role in pathology as a test collector and driver. Before seeking OCTEC, each of these experiences presented unique challenges and rewards that shaped his character.
Known for his warm and friendly demeanor, Bryn has always been eager to help others and is well-loved for his dry wit. However, life took a difficult turn when he had to leave full-time employment to care for his elderly father whose health was declining. Though he was glad that he could be there for his father, the isolation and lack of social interaction led to struggles with depression and anxiety, significantly impacting his mental health.
Following his father’s passing, Bryn faced profound loneliness and lost direction. His extended time away from work had left him socially isolated and lacking in self-confidence, with no family or close friends to support him. Despite his struggles, he remained an active job seeker, applying for various intriguing positions, including roles as a cook at an Antarctic research station and constructing villages in the Amazon.
Approaching OCTEC
Bryn’s situation began to change when he was referred to OCTEC DES in Woy Woy. Working with consultant Matt, they explored numerous employment options, but initial attempts to secure interviews were disheartening. Nevertheless, Bryn continued to visit the office daily, drawn by Matt’s excellent coffee and their collaborative efforts to rebuild his confidence.
Recognising Bryn’s warm personality and desire to assist others, Matt suggested that he consider a role in security. After enrolling Bryn in a three-day security course funded by OCTEC, he successfully earned the necessary licenses. Bryn then took on casual work at a local Toukley venue, but he preferred daytime shifts.
Securing the ideal job
Matt reached out to Owl Security in Gosford, which was looking for a daytime security guard for Kibble Park. Bryn aced the interview and was soon offered a trial, followed by a permanent position. This job has brought Bryn immense joy and a renewed sense of purpose, allowing him to re-engage with the community.
Bryn’s success story is a testament to resilience and the power of support, leaving a lasting impression on Matt and all who know him.
