A troubled past and living with dyslexia had held Andrew back, especially when it came to getting back into the workforce. Struggling financially, he was open to try any form of employment to turn his life around. The 22-year-old envisioned a future where he could support himself and make a positive contribution to society.
With a criminal record but determined to find a job, Andrew took a significant step by reaching out to OCTEC Transition to Work in Lithgow. He was assigned to Consultant Erin Rainsford, who recognised his potential and dedicated her energies to getting him ready for employment.
Erin committed herself to understanding Andrew’s unique challenges and worked with him to overcome these obstacles. Through various pre-employment activities, Erin’s first aim was to build Andrew’s confidence.
Under Erin’s guidance, Andrew also developed essential interview skills and gained critical insights into his workplace readiness. As he built his résumé, Erin encouraged Andrew to highlight his past experience in removalist work and construction. She highlighted the
importance of including personal qualities, helping him recognise that his adaptability and positive attitude could bring value to potential employers.
Since starting at Industrial Printing, Andrew has thrived in a supportive and collaborative work environment. Erin conducted weekly check-ins to monitor his progress, while Graham consistently praised Andrew’s work ethic and dedication. OCTEC provided Andrew with suitable work clothes for different climates and also assisted him in obtaining his forklift and motorbike licenses in preparation for the role.
With a newfound sense of purpose and direction, Andrew was ready to work hard and experience a better quality life. And he remains in the role today.
“After starting with OCTEC and having Erin as my Consultant, I’ve had nothing but success. Erin helped me with a lot of things and nothing was ever an issue. OCTEC and Erin also helped me with my forklift ticket. Erin called me and had organised a job interview which I got an apprenticeship out of. The people I work with are very supportive, and I really enjoy where I work. I find Erin very approachable and understanding; this has made achieving my goals much easier.”
