Barriers
Georgia faced significant learning difficulties due to Dyslexia, which left her feeling anxious and lacking the confidence necessary to pursue employment.
Approaching OCTEC
Seeking for employment support, the 23-year-old came to OCTEC DES in Pialba, on Queensland’s Fraser Coast.
Georgia was paired with consultant Annie Angelone. As part of the assessment process, Annie dedicated time to researching Dyslexia to identify strategies and resources that could help Georgia overcome her barrier.
Through her research, Annie discovered a reading aid known as a script scanner, which would assist Georgia in absorbing and sharing information more effectively. OCTEC purchased a script scanner and Georgia’s confidence began to grow as a result. She was able to read, comprehend and act on information in a far more effective manner.
With this newfound confidence, Annie and Georgia began the job search process. Annie later reached out to a local small cleaning business to discuss potential employment opportunities for Georgia.
The employer agreed to meet with Georgia, based on the information Annie provided on Georgia’s ability to follow instructions and complete work tasks. As a result, she was offered a cleaning position, marking the end of her two-year unemployment.
OCTEC further supported Georgia and her employer by providing a wage subsidy, personal protective equipment (PPE), workwear, and assistance with travel costs. To ensure a smooth transition into her new role, Annie maintained regular contact with both Georgia and her employer, checking in at least every two weeks to offer any needed support.
Georgia had a smooth transition into her new role, consistently leaving a positive impression on her employer and colleagues.
“Georgia is a delight on the job. She has shown me that her position with this company can be for as long as she wishes,” said Georgia’s employer.
