Barriers
At the age of 66, Gilbert Carter, simply known as Gil, faced a challenging journey back to the workforce. After enduring six years of unemployment due to health complications from seizures and multiple surgeries, he was eager to find an opportunity that would allow him to contribute and feel valued again.
Approaching OCTEC
In November 2018, Gil took a significant step forward by joining OCTEC DES in Toukley, under the guidance of consultant Elisha Bishell. From their first meeting, it was clear that Gil possessed a warm personality and a strong willingness to try anything that might lead to employment. He never missed an appointment and consistently approached challenges with enthusiasm.
Gil’s reliability and easy-going nature made him a joy to work with, but his confidence often dipped due to his health issues. Elisha focused on harnessing Gil’s positive traits while addressing his self-doubt.
Together, they tackled this challenge by enrolling him in Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) and Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) courses, which Gil found enjoyable. Elisha emphasised the benefits of hiring someone with Gil’s experience, reassuring him that he could be a role model for younger staff members.
As they began the job search, Gil faced a series of rejections, which threatened to undermine his newfound confidence. But Elisha never allowed Gil to feel like just a number, highlighting that he was a valued individual deserving of opportunities. They both reached out to local businesses, with Elisha taking the initiative to advocate for Gil and identifying potential roles that could be a fit for him.
New opportunity
Their persistence paid off when Elisha discovered a small Chinese restaurant located within a local golf club. Understanding Gil’s barriers, particularly his complex seizures, she thought that a slower-paced environment would suit him better than a busy establishment.
After successfully finding the right place, Gil thrived in this new role. He began serving customers, washing dishes, and preparing vegetables. Gil quickly adapted to the hospitality industry, building his confidence daily and enjoying the friendly chats with locals.
Ongoing support from Elisha remained vital to Gil’s success. She arranged work-related clothing and frequently visited the restaurant to check in with both Gil and the manager, Francis Teo.
Reflecting on his journey, Gil expressed immense gratitude for OCTEC and Elisha’s unwavering support.
