OCTEC continue to empower students enrolled to study

OCTEC Limited’s Glenn Taylor Scholarship is available once more to benefit rural and regional students studying accredited courses this year. Prospective students from Far West and Central West, NSW can benefit from up to $20,000.

Those who are looking to study a Certificate I through to an Advanced Diploma or Degree with TAFE NSW or an RTO similar to OCTEC Training Services RTO 90142, an Apprenticeship/Traineeship or studying a Degree at University or similar institution can apply for assistance.

The substantial bursary continues to have a tangible influence to alleviate financial hardship for regional and rural Australian students, given the burden of distance and personal circumstances can make education unattainable.

Last year’s cohort included a young woman studying to be a mechanic, another not letting her disability getting in the way of studying medicine, and a young First Nations man from Walgett studying paramedicine. These are just three inspiring stories from this year.

I aim to contribute to healthcare in underserved areas and to be a strong Indigenous leader and mentor for the youth within my home community, encouraging and assisting them in pursuing careers in healthcare despite the challenges and disparities First Nations People face.

OCTEC Limited Chairman, Jeff Whitton said this scholarship is particularly important with further education costs are rising, and to support students set themselves up for a better future.

“The scholarship is about ensuring students from diverse backgrounds who are limited by their circumstances have access to further learning,” he added.

“Education belongs to everyone. Scholarships empower those when they’re considering life-changing opportunities.”

Those living with disability, First Nations people, who are in unstable situations or mature-aged students heading back to school, or people who have excelled in their studies are encouraged to apply.

Glenn Taylor sat on the OCTEC Board, was an Orange City Councillor and small business owner. He passed away in January 2022 after a battle with cancer. This scholarship is offered in his honour.

This scholarship is more than financial assistance; it is belief in rural students. It recognises that capability and potential are not determined by postcode. Many rural students hesitate to apply for scholarships because they think they won’t meet the criteria. I felt that way too, until this opportunity. The Glenn Taylor Scholarship invests in students who are ready to work hard and make a difference.
It changes lives, mine is proof.
