Lazarus turns setbacks into opportunity

Barriers

Lazarus Munokoakura first connected with OCTEC through the Job Readiness program at Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre at the age of 17. With only a Year 8 education, a criminal record, and limited employment history, he faced significant challenges on his journey to employment.

Approaching OCTEC

Lazarus came to OCTEC Transition to Work (TtW) Campbelltown, where he partnered with consultant Danielle Couvakis. His enthusiasm shone through as he attended the Campbelltown site on the day of his release from Cobham.

Determined to make a fresh start and turn his life around, Lazarus found a caring consultant in Danielle, who dedicated herself to helping him prepare for the workforce.

Lazarus expressed a keen interest in pursuing jobs in warehousing or construction, however, being under age proved difficult to enrol in courses such as traffic control or forklift licensing.

Instead, OCTEC enrolled Lazarus in a White Card course and began assisting him in obtaining his driver’s license. Danielle focused on developing Mr Munokoakura’s job search skills, coaching him to view rejections and setbacks as valuable learning experiences.

Employment opportunity

After several setbacks, Danielle approached Paragon Manufacturing Group regarding a factory hand vacancy. This presented an important opportunity for Lazarus, meaning he had already made a significant step in his journey to employment.

Following a successful interview that impressed his potential employer, Lazarus was offered the job. Before commencing work, OCTEC also supported Lazarus by covering transport costs and providing the necessary equipment for his new role.

Despite a challenging past, Lazarus has completely turned his life around. With the unwavering support of Danielle and the Transition to Work program, his future looks much brighter. Lazarus is now part of the workforce, happier than ever, and excited for the future that lies ahead.

“OCTEC has helped me find a job close to home and provided work clothes. They also continue to help me gain skills, which makes me feel happier about the future. Thank you.”
