Aged care a comforting career for Lenka after mental illness

After experiencing anxiety due to COVID-19, participant Lenka had chosen to take a mental health break. Mental illness continued to plague Lenka, eating away at her confidence as lockdown lifted.

The thought of working full time overwhelmed the 47-year-old, even though she needed a job to alleviate some financial difficulties stemming from unemployment.

Seeking support

Seeking the right guidance and support, Lenka approached OCTEC Jobs Victoria in Elsternwick. This is where she met Mentor Diletta, who helped steer her in the right direction toward employment.

Diletta assisted Lenka with her resume, highlighting her strong background in sales and exceptional customer skills. Given her transferable skills, Diletta suggested she apply for jobs with flexibility. This would gradually help Lenka return to employment and regain her self-confidence.

Their job search then focused on aged care, fitness and health, and community industries as roles offered shorter shifts and more options for working arrangements than a traditional sales position. Lenka struggled writing cover letters, particularly addressing the selection criteria. Once putting in the effort, the rejection of unsuccessful job applications was intensely disheartened.

Finding the right job

Ongoing support and assistance to develop a resume helped her develop confidence and explore various job opportunities. Diletta encouraged her to apply for a support worker position at Home Instead Brighton.

Lenka thought she could apply her compassionate and approachable qualities in this aged care role and make a positive impact on peoples’ lives. She secured an interview shortly after applying.

Following a successful interview, Lenka immediately landed the job and commenced employment as a caregiver.

Diletta maintained regular contact to ensure everything ran smoothly as Lenka started in her new position. OCTEC continued to support Lenka with travel vouchers and post placement support visits.

After her anxiety of entering the workforce again, Lenka couldn’t be any happier with her new role in aged care. She has overcome numerous barriers to become a confident and successful person once more.

“Diletta has been extremely helpful in mentoring and motivating me. She gave me great tips on writing cover letters and helped reformat my resume. I am now working for Home Instead, which I absolutely love. It’s different from my previous jobs, but I’m much happier with an amazing work-life balance.”
