Donations to food service charities

OCTEC is doing its bit to support those who are really struggling in Orange, NSW.

For example, the homeless, those living in share houses or skipping meals, large families, those who are lonely and those suffering due to the cost of living crisis.

$15,000 has been donated each to the Orange Uniting Church and FoodCare Orange.

Both organisations say people have been slipping through the gaps since COVID lockdowns, with issues getting worse.

The church prepares and shares 150 hot take away meals with the community every Saturday. They also deliver to the frail and handicapped. It’s been a service run by the Church since COVID lockdowns, with the need still there for those facing hardship or could do with a freshly cooked meal.

OCTEC Chair Jeff Whitton visited the Orange Uniting Church to give Rev. Andrew Cunningham and the ‘hot meals team’ the good news about the donation.

OCTEC Board Member Reg Kidd visited FoodCare Orange to talk with Coordinator Tim Mordue and volunteer Lee Cook about their services, and pass on a significant cheque.
FoodCare Orange offers food for those who can’t make healthy choices due to financial limitations.

The non-for-profit organisation offers fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, milk, bread and eggs as well as staples bought from Food Bank.

The customer base varies from those large families to the homeless or those living in share houses, fleeing domestic violence, or living on charity subsidies. Volunteers keep the organisation running throughout the week much-needed services, operating their store and delivering to customers.

OCTEC recognises the support these two volunteer-based organisations offer those in the community who live with financial and accessibility issues that impact their access fresh food.
