Barriers
Nurbe is an asylum seeker who has faced significant challenges in her search for employment. With a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background, she encountered difficulties in securing a job.
Since her arrival in Australia, Nurbe has struggled to maintain consistent employment. However, she received valuable assistance from OCTEC Jobs Victoria, which helped her find long-term work.
Nurbe exemplifies resilience. As an asylum seeker, she has consistently faced obstacles in her job search, primarily due to her limited English proficiency and skill set.
Approaching OCTEC
OCTEC’s Jobs Victoria mentors are dedicated to supporting disadvantaged jobseekers on their journey toward employment and self-sufficiency. Nurbe was referred to OCTEC Jobs Victoria through a local refugee and migration service.
Arriving in Australia from Burma in 2013, Nurbe’s quest for employment was fraught with challenges, particularly as she lacked access to income support.
With her limited English literacy, it was crucial for Nurbe to have the right mentor to guide her toward securing employment. In December 2021, she began her journey with OCTEC in Dandenong and was paired with her Jobs Victoria Mentor, Ajay Kumar.
Despite facing barriers and lacking work experience, Ajay was impressed by Nurbe’s positive attitude. To support her in making ends meet, he connected her with local community service providers and encouraged her to visit the office regularly.
Ajay dedicated time to work with Nurbe through the job search process, assisting her in reaching out to potential employers. Although she faced numerous rejections, Ajay’s mentorship helped keep her motivated and focused.
New employment opportunity
Recognizing an opportunity, Ajay contacted a local labor hire company that had a client seeking laundry workers. Importantly, the work site was conveniently located near Nurbe’s residence, alleviating transportation concerns. She was successful in securing the position.
The mentoring relationship continued beyond Nurbe’s placement, with Ajay maintaining contact with both her and her employer as part of the Jobs Victoria post-placement support. As of May 2022, Nurbe has been employed for over three months and continues to thrive in her role.
